Grounds for Health Saves Lives of Women

Clearwater, FL, November 2012 – Tis the season of giving and without a doubt, philanthropy in the coffee industry is making a positive, lasting impact on the lives of those who grow and harvest coffee. One program that is benefitting from the generosity of companies who serve the coffee market is Grounds for Health, an international non-profit whose mission is to partner with coffee-growing communities to reduce the unacceptably high rate of cervical cancer.

Founded in 1996, Grounds for Health has matured into an internationally recognized force in addressing this 100% preventable cancer-killer of women through screening, treatment and training.  They attribute the key to providing sustainable, effective and affordable cervical cancer prevention services in coffee communities as simply this: empower the community to own and lead the program.   More than 34,000 women have received screening as a direct result of Grounds for Health’s programs in Mexico, Tanzania and Nicaragua.  Most significantly, however, is that over half of these women have been screened in their own community clinics by one of the 250 local doctors and nurses trained by Grounds for Health.

Monin Gourmet Flavorings, the world’s leading provider of premium syrups and flavoring products, presented a check for $25,000 to Grounds for Health at the recent SCAA Convention in Portland.  This donation designates nearly $100,000 donated by Monin throughout the years.   “Monin is absolutely committed to this organization”, said Bill Lombardo, CEO of Monin.  “Grounds for Health is a perfect partnership for us to showcase the need to help prevent cervical cancer in remote coffee growing communities.”
